Getting Ready for Spring

While it may not seem so, spring is right around the corner! With warmer weather approaching, now is a good time to prepare your home for the spring season. Here are some tips to ensure you and your home are ready for spring.

Inside

Not all of spring has to do with lawn maintenance, as spring is also a time where your home itself needs to be ready too. First, you may want to check if your air conditioner is functioning properly. It’s better to be safe than sorry, and realizing your AC isn’t working properly on the first hot day of the year would be less than ideal. If there are any problems it is best to schedule an appointment now for a time in the future than wait until they have tons of people trying to schedule repairing appointments. Changing your HVAC filter is also something you should look to do before you have to use it. Procrastination is tempting, but overcoming it is extremely rewarding. It is also a good time to check your refrigerator’s filter before your refrigerator becomes an indispensable item during warmer months. This may also be a good time to inspect your clothes dryer vent to ensure it will function properly as well. If you end up with some broken appliances in need of repair, consider our home storage options to help with the logistics of it!

Outside

The biggest change that comes with spring time occurs outside. After the snow has completely melted it is the perfect time to start inspecting your home. Walk around and inspect the entire exterior to see if there are any areas that need to be repainted or have been damaged during the winter. It is also a prime time to trim trees and branches that might get too close to your home. Once they bloom a close enough branch can act like a freeway for bugs to enter your home in the spring.  Another important thing to check is your drainage systems. Before it starts raining too often, making sure your gutters are clear of debris and are ready to roll is a very important way to avoid water damage. Inspecting your roof is also another very important place that the winter could have damaged. You don’t want any damaged or missing shingles, or even a defunct chimney, to become a problem before it’s too late. Making sure your sprinklers are ready to operate for the spring and summer time is also another good way to get ahead of the game. Trying to repair sprinklers during their peak season of use will be a decision that you’ll feel in your pocket and will take more time than sorting out any problems now.

The arrival of spring will be an exciting time for many. But like all exciting opportunities, you must prepare for them in advance. By getting ready for spring now, you will be ahead of the game and will ensure your home is in tip-top shape.

Celebrating Halloween With Home Decorations

When it comes to the spookiest holiday of the year, none can compare to the thrills and chills that are enjoyed on Halloween! From haunted houses to pitch-black corn mazes, plenty of destinations are set up each year to provide a true fright for those compelled by the dark and the macabre. The holiday doesn’t have to be terrifying beyond words, however, as there are plenty of ways to extend the fun to the little ones, regardless of age! Here are a few decorative ideas to help get your home prepared for the final day of October and to involve the kids in a fun activity.

Jack-o’-lanterns

Perhaps the most iconic symbol of the fall season is the pumpkin thanks to its large size and striking orange color. The fun in pumpkins isn’t limited to merely picking them at local farms, as once one is picked, it becomes a canvas to express your imagination. By utilizing a kitchen knife or other sharp tool, you can easily create a spooky jack-o’-lantern that is perfect for a bay window or front stoop. If you’re looking to extend the crafting activity to children, you can even just grab paint instead of tools and paint a face directly on the pumpkin’s exterior. You may decide to even drop the brush and have an enjoyable afternoon of finger painting!

Spooky Ghosts

In celebrating Halloween, it’s hard to ignore the chilling image that a ghost presents! While there are certainly endless amounts of pre-made ghost decorations that you can buy in a store, making a DIY project out of it is quite a bit more fun! Since the traditional look of a ghost is pretty vague in that it only has to be white or translucent, you are free to start with anything from sheets to garbage bags. With the exterior established, the shape can attained by utilizing a stuffing such as paper, cotton, or simply hanging it outside to sway in the breeze.

Spiders and Bats

Combining both the color black with creatures that lurk in the night, spiders and bats embody the spirit of Halloween better than any other animals. As such, utilizing their images for a bit of decorating fun is a great way to add a creepy touch to your home this holiday. The simplest and cheapest way is to create them out of construction paper, which is simple and safe enough for all ages to enjoy. Just create a stencil of the image that you want and make as many as you like. You may even decide to ramp things up with 3D paper models or accessories for the eyes.

4 Ways to Improve Your Gardening

Gardening can be a fulfilling hobby for many. But, this hobby does take serious time and dedication to truly be a successful gardener. Here are a few ways to improve your gardening!

Specialized Tools

This is the simplest way to make the next step. A pair of gloves and a hose can get a few plants growing, but to tame a tremendous and grand garden more specialized tools will be needed. Examples include hedge trimmers, large shears, a good spade. Just look into what plants you have and what you need to take care of them to the best of your potential. And don’t even worry about where you’ll store your new tools!

Fertilize

A lush garden may need some extra energy to reach your goals. Fertilizing is probably the most effective way to ensure your plants grow green and as vibrant as possible. For us in the northeast, fall is the best time to fertilize your garden, which is coming up in just one month! If you need to use a lot of fertilizer or even mulch, our home renovation storage options can also be suitable for you. Only make one trip to the store and then keep any fertilizer or mulch on hand at our facilities as you need!

Clean

Accumulation is your enemy! Any dead leaves or plant particles on the ground near your plants is thatch. That thatch should be removed! It blocks necessary water and nutrients from reaching your plants. Also, it makes your garden look tidier and nicer to an outside eye. A fresh layer of compost, topsoil, or mulch depending on the plants you own can also add to the aesthetic of your garden. Keep in mind your area may have services to pick up lawn and gardening debris and trash, which helps with disposal of the thatch!

Boundaries

A garden isn’t just a generalized location for plants. The plants don’t have to mingle, and your garden can be spread all across your property. Don’t be afraid to create nice stone boundaries between different sections. You can even use other materials like rope and get creative to design different boundaries. Use flower pots for certain plants that you would like to highlight or to put plants in different places above the ground. A more well spread out garden over your property will really go to accentuate its beauty and how well it goes with your house.

A nice garden can be a beautiful part of any home. These 4 tips can make your garden even more lush and pleasing than it already is!

Planning A Memorable Backyard Party This Summer

The dog days of summer may be upon us, but that doesn’t mean you have to let the heat ruin your outdoor fun. While many utilize August to head on road trips and tropical vacations, the prime place to relax may be right in your own backyard – literally! Not only does your backyard provide a peaceful setting for a summer afternoon or evening, but enjoying it won’t cost you a dime in travel fees. Since kicking back with friends and family is an ideal way to connect and enjoy the weather, we have compiled a few tips for hosting your own backyard party this season.

The Barbecue

When preparing to host your event, it’s beneficial to consider who will be attending. Will there be small children present? Stock up on Popsicles, kid-friendly beverages, and foods that all ages can enjoy. Will there be people who have specific dietary requirements or allergies? Considering these things prior to buying food may not only save you money when it comes to buying too much of certain items, but it will also be appreciated by your guests. When in doubt, simply ask!

The Entertainment

The interactions that you will be sharing with your guests will be the main attraction for the event, but adding a bit of flavor to the activities may provide the basis for lasting memories. Brainstorm a list of outdoor games and sports equipment that would work well in your yard. If you don’t have room for something like a volleyball net, think smaller with activities like water balloons and horseshoes. Plus, music can help set the tone in a crucial way, so either pump tunes from inside the house or use a portable radio or sound system for a pleasant atmosphere.

The Natural Setting

Whether you have a sprawling backyard or a small enclosure, outdoor spaces of all sizes tend to become cluttered with items and structures. From decks and pools, to swing sets and sheds, the ability to enjoy your time outdoors can be quite difficult if you don’t feel a connection to nature. You may not be able to expand the land your backyard occupies, but you can certainly free up some space with A Space Place Storage! We have units in a variety of sizes that are perfect for backyard furniture, plus our monthly payment options allow you to store seasonal equipment without long term contracts.

3 Fresh Ideas for Decorating a Room

A room with empty walls and just furniture can get pretty stale. Thankfully, people have designed products to help decorate rooms and make them lively! Here are some ways you can decorate any room in the house.

Tapestries

Instead of an empty wall, or a wall filled with numerous posters, a tapestry can provide a fresh decor idea. With colorful designs, wall tapestries can be a way to change the mood of a bedroom or even a living room! One piece can be the main focus of an entire room. If you need to clear up furniture to free up wall space, we can help! Freeing up clutter and focusing the design of a room on a few large decor pieces can make the room look more modern and appealing. And if you ever decide to remove the tapestry, unlike a poster, the cloth can be repurposed as a tablecloth or even a blanket!

Artwork

The classic fixture of a living room, artwork can really express the mood of a room. Without breaking the bank, a simple piece or art with a landscape portrait can take up a whole wall. The only way artwork can go wrong as decor if it is overdone. Try not to clutter a wall with multiple pieces. The same holds true for the type of artwork as well. If you only have one type of art style on all of the walls in your home (for example, portraits of individuals) it might be a little weird. As clutter experts, we recommend moderation and spacing to be considered when choosing artwork in designing your home.

Rug

Often overlooked, the floor decor of a room can be critical depending on the flooring of the room. However, under any circumstance a nice rug can really tie a room together. Especially for wooden floors, a rug can be a necessary feature in the part of the room that sees the most foot traffics. Or if the room doesn’t have a centerpiece, if you don’t want it to look too empty, a rug can offer a layer of design that doesn’t actually take up any space. Also, some well placed rugs can make your house feel warmer during the cold winter months and could potentially cut down energy costs through perceived warmth.

Interior design is your own prerogative, move forward with it how you please. However, these three ideas can help you brainstorm ways to reinvent your home.

Go to a community event, invite your neighbors to dinner. Not only are these nice things to do, but being a part of a strong community makes your home safer and in turn your presence makes the community stronger and safer as well. If you’re going away for a vacation, having a strong bond with your neighbors allows you to simply ask them to take your mail and watch over your home. Ensuring Your Barbecue is Successful in 3 Steps

Hosting a successful barbecue can be a crowning achievement. The happiness and enjoyment a well-planned out barbecue can bring to guests and the hosts is second to none. Now that it is barbecue season again, it’s important you bring you’re a game to the next barbecue you host. By following these three steps you will drastically decrease the risk of your barbecue going poorly.

Step 1: Prepare the Venue

Before you worry about food, invitations, and weather, the most immediate thing to consider is if you’re physically prepared to host people at your home. Thinking of inviting 50 people? You should have enough seating, enough space in the shade, enough plates, and activities for all of those people. The biggest issue could be not having enough seating or shade outside for all 50 people to comfortably enjoy their meals. To address this, buying a few outdoor tents and outdoor seating could be a worthwhile investment. These things to take up space, but keep in mind you can always store them once summer is over and then break them out next summer!

Step 2: Ensuring Entertainment

Eating and talking are the cornerstones of a good barbecue. However, there should be some more entertainment options available for guests. Outdoor games like Kan-Jam and cornhole are perfect for a barbecue. Do you have a pool? Well now would be the perfect time to make sure it’s open and clean! Make sure your guests know you have a pool they can swim in so they can plan accordingly. Maybe you can set up a volleyball net? Again, don’t worry about how you’ll store these things if you buy them, as they are worthwhile investments for future summers that you can store at home or with us. You can try and coincide the barbecue with a sporting event (a baseball game or the Euros this summer). Feel free to be creative in trying to make sure your guests are having a good time!

Step 3: Ensure Food is Tasty

The bottom-line with a barbecue is the food. It’s in the name. If you have stellar food, it can make up for sub-par performances in other categories. A grill master is essential. If you aren’t confident in your own abilities to man the grill, make sure you invite family or friend who you know can step up in the moment and perform. Also, make sure they’re open to doing the grilling (a phone call beforehand would suffice.) Invest in quality ingredients. Quality ingredients, a quality grill master, and at least 2 side dishes will wrap up the food category as a triumphant performance for you as the host of the barbecue.

Following these three simple steps will help take your next barbecue to the next level.
